Altar Guild, Lectors, and Ushers

The Altar Guild volunteers care for the altar, vestments, vessels, communion items, and altar linens of the parish on a weekly basis. They follow the liturgical calendar and make changes based on the traditional colors, placements, and arrangements of each Holy season.

Lectors are volunteers who read aloud the scripture verses (with the exception of The Gospel) and/or The Prayers of the People during our church service.
A chalicist is a layperson authorized to assist clergy in administering the wine (cup) during Holy Communion.

Ushers greet parishioners at the door, distribute the bulletin, pass the offering plates, take the wine and wafers up for Communion blessing, direct pews for Communion, and take attendance.

To volunteer for lector or chalicist roles, please us the SignUpGenius link above or call/email the office to select available dates!

To train and volunteer with the Altar Guild, please connect with Lee Parsons and Nicole Murray.
Garden Committee

The Garden Committee meets on Monday mornings from 10:30am to noon, weather permitting (year round). We attend to the chores needed to maintain curb appeal with a Creation Care mindset. We also harvest flowers from our pollinator garden and other areas for the altar bouquets and event decor.

We welcome any volunteer who want to help at other times of the week as there are always tasks to do. We can certainly share our chore wish list!

Adopt-a-Garden-Area: If you would like to commit to a section of the SJ grounds, we welcome it! The sanctuary and columbarium pots have a current sponsor. Other areas of the grounds are up for adoption.

English ivy is something we are constantly battling as a historic building. It can wreak havoc on brick work/pointing. We welcome extra sets of eyes on finding new bits of ivy as it pops up.

We also need ongoing help with lawn mowing and trimming....please see the SignUpGenius link above!

Flower Guild

Our Flower Guild prepares arrangements for the altar according to the liturgical season (and the natural availabilities of our gardens). They also make the sanctuary beautiful during special occasions such as Easter and Christmas with wrapped memorial plants.

If you would like to make an altar flower donation with a memorial posted in the Sunday bulletin, please contact the office. The altar arrangements are $50 through our partnership with Dee's Florist in Aberdeen. Forms are also available in the sanctuary.

Please note: During Lent, there are no flowers on the altar. During Advent, only greenery is on the altar...and the Christmas decor/poinsettias are brought out on Christmas Eve. Therefore, altar flower memorial dedications are not available during Lent and Advent.

If you would like to make a donation or have a cut-flower garden with items to share, please connect with with the Flower Guild!

While they use St. John's facilities, the volunteers are made up of teams from various local churches who run the program on Tuesday mornings. A meal is served and groceries are available for pick up.

St. John's team serves on the third Tuesday of each month, with Lee Parsons as the liaison. Our team works with a team from St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Louise Silsby is the site coordinator (410-734-6721 or email

Children's Sunday School
Children's Sunday School is available for kindergarten through 5th grade students. We use the Sparkhouse Digital Whirl Lectionary series curriculum.

Children learn the same main scripture lesson as the adults each week. After a short reading, video, and activity, they are led back to the sanctuary to join their parents for communion.

Those who feel called to support the Children's Ministry by teaching will need to complete Safe Church training. Donations for curriculum materials and craft supplies are also appreciated!

Building Repair Fundraisers
A normal part of being a good steward of a historic building is continuous care and upkeep, which requires fundraising.
As the Vestry launches new initiatives, they will be shared at service announcements, on Facebook, in church emails...and we encourage all to share!
